Creating a lasting impression through positive guidance and direction from an early age often results in children having a clearer idea of what they would like to be when they grow up.
This was the idea behind Tuesday’s Career Day at Excel Beetham Estate Government Primary School.
According to Acting Principal Kenya Kiteme, the Career Day was a concept of the Ministry of Education as part of their cultural transformation initiative enabling a wider range of career goals and choices for aspiring children.
She said this is the second year hosting the event and reflected on the success of the 2024 edition.
“They were still talking about what they experienced last year, so I know that they would have gone away with a tremendous amount of insight for about many other careers that they may not have even considered before. So I know this year they are looking forward to that much more.”
Doctoral student in Analytical Chemistry at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Jenna-Marie Alvarez, said after experiencing the wonders of chemistry, she had a desire to provide a similar experience to young people.
“Just seeing how their eyes lit up and they were so hands-on and they wanted to touch everything and do everything, and they wanted to know why this is like this, and why that is like that. It was really nice to see so I am very passionate about chemistry and my love for it.”
Police Constable Ashers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service engaged the students by sharing his own story of how he became a police officer. He said the TTPS has a wide range of units, sections and career options.
“When I was younger I wanted to be a police officer, so I will tell them about my experience, my dreams, and I will impart that information to them. I will also tell them to go to school, study, listen to your elders, listen to your teachers, and also look to a mentor, a positive mentor, and follow in that person’s angle or even listen to them.”
Other guests present at Career Day were members of the Trinidad and Tobago Port Authority and the National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST).
